BEMIDJI -- Bemidji is set to host the District 9 VFW Bantam A/AA tournament Friday-Sunday, Feb. 23-25, at Bemidji Community Arena. The tournament’s opening ceremony starts at noon Friday and will include the Bemidji VFW color guard and the national anthem sung by Joe Vene. The winner of this weekend’s tournament will advance to the VFW State Bantam Hockey Tournament.
Sheriff's Report The Beltrami County Sheriff's Office responded to the following calls Tuesday: Disorderly Conduct 10:52 a.m. A 57-year-old male was cited for disorderly conduct at the 7200 block of Fairgrounds Road NW. Family Crimes 3:07 p.m. Deputies received a report of an unrestrained child in a motor vehicle near the intersection of Highway 2 NW and Highway 89 NW. The information was forwarded to the Minnesota State Patrol. Police Report
BLACKDUCK -- A benefit for Kerry Kilde will be held at 5 p.m., on Saturday, Feb. 24, at 27773 Lanet Road NE. The event will include a drawing, a live auction, raffles and a performance by The Jason Waldron Band at 7 p.m. Kilde has been unable to work since he experienced a medical injury to his ankle He is not expected to be cleared until March, according to a press release.
GRAND RAPIDS -- The Bemidji High School girls basketball team could not contain Grand Rapids Tuesday night, falling 87-46 in a road loss. The Thunderhawks (18-7) saw two players break double digits in scoring with Hannah DeMars and Heaven Hamling tallying 22 and 21 points, respectively. Grand Rapids added on to a 44-27 halftime lead, pulling away in the second half for the victory.
BEMIDJI -- Kerigan Dowhy of the Bemidji State women’s hockey team received the first Western Collegiate Hockey Association award of her career when she was named league rookie of the week Tuesday.
Bemidji High School students Louis Saxton and Vanessa Petrich make their way through the BHS gym on Tuesday after being crowned Snow Week King and Queen. Saxton was crowned as a stand-in for his brother, Tommy Saxton, who was unable to attend the coronation.
Sheriff's Report The Beltrami County Sheriff's Office responded to the following calls Friday - Monday: Assault 6:19 p.m. Friday. A juvenile was arrested for assault in Blackduck. 3:48 a.m. Monday. A 63-year-old male was arrested for domestic assault at the 500 block of 18th Street SW. DWI 2:08 a.m. Sunday. A 54-year-old male was arrested for DWI at the intersection of Wildwood Road NE and Highway 71 NE.
DEER RIVER -- The Blackduck/Cass Lake-Bena wrestling team claimed the Section 7A team championship Saturday at the section team tournament in Deer River to qualify for the Class A state team tournament. The Bears defeated Rush City-Braham 62-15 in the quarterfinals, dispatched Deer River 43-23 in the semifinals and topped Royalton-Upsala 46-28 in the title match to lift the section championship trophy.
BEMIDJI—No serious injuries were reported Sunday after a car struck a guardrail in Beltrami County. A 2012 Nissan Sentra driven by Karen Bernard, 43, of Tenstrike was eastbound on U.S. Highway 2 at U.S. Highway 71 when the vehicle slid on ice, left the road and struck a guardrail, according to a report from the Minnesota State Patrol. The accident was reported at 12:42 p.m. Sunday. Bernard was transported by Bemidji Ambulance to Sanford Bemidji Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries, the report said.
