SOFTBALL: Jacks erupt for 20 runs to split with Spuds
MOORHEAD -- The Bemidji High School softball team bounced back from a 15-13 loss in the first game of Tuesday’s doubleheader to blow out Moorhead 20-3 in the nightcap as the team split the series in Moorhead.
The Lumberjacks (8-5) trailed 2-0 after two innings in the first game before Evette Morgan drove in the first run on a double in the third inning. However, the Spuds (4-10) scratched six runs across in bottom half of the frame to take an 8-1 lead.
Each team added a run in the fourth before six runners crossed home plate for BHS in the top of the fifth. The outburst cut the deficit to one run for the Jacks, but Moorhead answered with a five-run bottom half to go ahead 14-8.
Bemidji tallied two runs and Moorhead one in the sixth to send the game to the seventh with the Spuds up 15-10. The Jacks closed the gap to within two runs, but ran out of outs as they fell 15-13.
The second game began much better for BHS as the visitors scored two runs in the first and three in the second to own a 5-1 advantage after three innings.
The Jacks blew the doors off the Spuds in the top of the fourth, erupting for 15 runs and a commanding 20-1 lead. Moorhead scored twice in the bottom half, but the game was called after four innings as Bemidji came away with a 17-run victory.
The Lumberjacks will cross into North Dakota for their next games Friday, May 11. They’ll take on Grand Forks Red River in a doubleheader at 4:30 p.m. that afternoon.
