MEN'S BASKETBALL: Beavers earn 1,000th win in program history

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- After 96 years of history for the Bemidji State men’s basketball team, Friday night’s 74-68 victory over Sioux Falls marked win No. 1,000 for the Beavers.

Sharif Black netted 18 points, Logan Bader locked down a 14-point, 10-rebound double-double, and Christian Pekarek and Derek Thompson each added another 13 points to lead BSU (7-9, 4-7 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference) to the program milestone in Sioux Falls, S.D.

A hot start allowed Bemidji State to play in the lead, as Black and Bader traded three-point plays to hit a 13-0 start. The Cougars (10-6, 6-5 NSIC) answered with the next eight, but the Beavers then did the same by rattling off the following eight points.

USF kept with the theme, taking off for another 8-0 run soon after for a 24-19 game, but BSU held to its lead all the way to a 32-27 halftime score.

Sioux Falls kept within striking distance early in the second half, ultimately taking a 41-40 edge on an and-one jumper by Drew Guebert, but Bemidji State answered with six in a row to go up for good.

The difference returned to double-digits when Pekarek sunk a pair of late free throws, making for a 66-55 game. A 3-pointer for Teathloach Pal and a layup for Guebert marked the start of a desperate Cougar comeback, but BSU did enough from the charity stripe to clinch No. 1,000 with the 74-68 win.

Along with their double-digit scoring, Pekarek finished with six assists and Black five, splitting the distribution duties. Additionally, Jai’Vionne Green came away with nine points and seven rebounds to help the Bemidji State cause.

Trevon Evans scored a game-high 21 points for Sioux Falls on 5-for-15 shooting, but was the lone Cougar in double figures.

Bemidji State will look to pick up win No. 1,001 when they meet Southwest Minnesota State at 7 p.m. tonight in Marshall.
